(10 sep. 1713, Londres, Inglaterra–30 dic. 1781, Bruselas, Bélgica).
Naturalista británico. Era un sacerdote católico, cuyas lecturas sobre los organismos microscópicos lo indujeron a estudiar historia natural en Londres y París (1746–49). Se convirtió en un fuerte defensor de la teoría de que la vida surgió de la materia inorgánica (generación espontánea) y de que los procesos vitales no podían ser explicados por las leyes de la química y la física (
vitalismo). En 1750 presentó su teoría de la generación espontánea y trató de aportar pruebas científicas que la respaldaran.
